Ashburton Activities

Ashburton is an exciting area of New Zealand offering activities around the Lake Hood, Ashburton River Track, rowing regattas, golf, boating and fishing and access to the Mount Hutt ski fields.

The Ashburton Domain in the centre of town is a large beautifully planted garden with established trees, next to the domain are the Ashburton Tennis, hockey centres and cricket grounds. The Ashburton Domain is 37 hectares of open space, lawns, gardens and recreational facilities. It is the jewel in Ashburton’s crown. Learn more

 

Ashburton Aviation Museum was once training world war pilots between 1942 and 1944 the museum displays planes including a restored Harrier Jet a German Weife Glider and a Cropmaster 25R. Learn more

Ashford’s Handcrafts and Village Ashford’s Ashburton have revolutionised the hand spinning of wool fibres with the production of their equipment. Wool from fine merino /Polworth and stronger Romney are dyed and spun into yarns. Fibers are blended with other fibers and silk fibers are woven. Ashford’s make a range of spinning, weaving and carding equipment and supply dyed yarn and felting equipment. Tinwald Great Plains Vintage Railway Museum  you can view a restored K88 Washington Steam Engine. The museum is the remains of the 43.7km branch line railway set up to cart lignite coal and lime from the deposits inland beyond Mt Sommers. This pioneer village of a New Zealand railway branch line includes an old railway station and historic buildings along with old agricultural equipment of traction engines,harvesters,ploughs and threshing machines. Lake Hood

Lake Hood

Lake Hood hosts an eight lane international rowing course used for rowing regattas, Iron Man Challenges and swimming events along with kayaking and dragon boating championships.This lake is ideal for swimming and picnics it is used for boating and water skiing and jet skii-ing. Lake Hood has its own water front cafe and restaurant. Riverfields self contained cottage for two is on Grahams Road 3km from Lake Hood Riverfields Cottage can be cycled or walked to Lake Hood by using the Ashburton River Track.

Directions to Lake Hood Ashburton turn off state highway one at Tinwald on the southern side of Ashburton at the Lake Hood Aquatic Park sign post onto Grahams Road, follow this road 3km and you will be at Riverfields ,continue for another 3km travelling past Boundary Road and onto Stranges Road to Lake Hood.

Lake Hood Ashburton is a man-made recreational lake that is 2.3 km long and 1 km wide.There is substantial subdivision housing along one side of this lake. Following the left hand road options will bring you to the top of the lake.

Mt Hutt Ski Field is 80km from Christchurch west of the Canterbury plains at 683 meters above sea level there are fantastic views of the Canterbury Plains and the Rakaia braided river.

Mt Hutt International ski field is one hours drive form the Riverfields cottage to the snow.The snow field is 55 km from Ashburton.There is an access road of 13 km to the field.

Mt Hutt Ski Fiekd caters for skiers of all abilities. There is a learners magic carpet with good intermediate and advanced runs and access to large piste areas. Golf

The Ashburton District has five challenging country golf courses which can be reached within 30 minutes to an hour’s drive. All courses cater for golfers of all levels.
